InstallFree Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What are the InstallFree basic components for a complete virtual environment?

A: In order to setup a complete InstallFree virtual environment by yourself you will need the following components - InstallFree Management Console (IFMC) and the InstallFree Bridge.

Q: How does the InstallFree solution work?

A: You can find out all about it on the InstallFree technology page. But roughly speaking the flow of the virtual environment is as the following:

  1. Create a virtual application using the InstallFree Encapsulator
  2. Import the virtual application to the IFMC
  3. Deliver the virtual application to the end user via the InstallFree Bridge.

Q: Where can I get the InstallFree components?

A: If you are a registered customer, you can find all components inside the Customers Area. In case you are not registered customer it is highly recommended to fill out our contact form, and we will be glad to supply a trial version.

Q: What is encapsulation?

A: Encapsulation is the name of the procedure that creates a virtual application, also known as an Application on Demand (AOD) file.

Q: What is an AOD file?

A: AOD stands for Application on Demand. AOD is InstallFree's format to store the application's file system and all its resources such as registry keys, services, DLL files etc, in one compressed file. AOD files are created during the encapsulation process. This virtualized application can then be deployed via the InstallFree Bridge to the entire organization's users.

Q: How do I deploy virtual applications (AOD's) to users?

A: In order to deploy AOD's you will need to use the InstallFree Management Console (IFMC) which connects to your domain controllers by reading from the Active Directory schema. The IFMC can deliver an AOD to any object in the AD tree.

Q: Can I encapsulate myself?

A: Yes, using the InstallFree Encapsulator. It can run on any Windows XP PC without requiring a special "clean" machine or any software installed.

Q: Does InstallFree require a clean machine?

A: Absolutely no. InstallFree does not require a clean machine because the virtualization process occurs completely independent of the host OS.

Q: What happens during encapsulation?

A: During the encapsulation process, an application setup file is executed and installed into a clean slate OS which has no dependencies on the underlying operating system. During this process, the application is virtualized and packaged with all the necessary resources it needs to function independent of the operating system including registry, DLLs, named objects etc...

Q: Do I need a dedicated server for InstallFree?

A: No. The only requirement in order to start an InstallFree virtual environment is a simple shared folder on your file server and the InstallFree Bridge virtual agent which runs on the client PC upon login to Active Directory. The Bridge does not need to be installed on the local PC as it is a script that executes when the user logs on to their machine.

Q: What kind of permission do I need on the InstallFree shared folder?

A: The permissions to this folder are quite simple; users who get the virtual applications have read only permission on the folder. IFMC Admins have read\write permissions.

Q: I am spending a lot of time out of the office, will my virtual applications be available when I am not connected to the internet?

A: Yes, InstallFree is providing 3 ways of application availability: Online, Offline and Streaming. The method of application availability can be changed through the IFMC.

Q: Can I deliver virtual applications to any kind of OS?

A: You may deliver applications to almost any Windows-based platform, including Terminal Server, Citrix XenApp, and Windows based Virtual Machines.

Q: What file system and compression does InstallFree use?

A: InstallFree is using Solid File System (SolFS) and Zlib compression mechanism.

Q: What protocol does InstallFree use to deliver the virtual application?

A: InstallFree uses Server Message Block (SMB) and HTTP protocols to deliver virtual applications from the IFMC to the Bridge client.

Q: I am an IT Administrator and I have a large amount of virtualized applications in my IFMC, but my users don't need all of them and I don't want to deploy them separately for each user. What should I do?

A: Designed especially for this kind of situation, InstallFree developed a tool called "Self Provision" which is available in the suite 1.9 release. Using this tool an IT Admin can choose virtual applications which will be available to the user, and with the Self Provision application, the user can choose which of those applications he/she wants to access on his/her machine.

Q: I've setup an InstallFree complete virtual environment and I have some questions which are not mentioned here. What should I do?
